The Wedding Clique -Winter Mixer 1.15.2010 Downtown Long Beach & Free Mix

January, NOZZA Studio, Bella Fiore, RnR Entertainment and Henry Chen Photography  hosted the first annual Wedding Clique mixer for industry vendors. We’d like to extend a huge thank you to everyone that showed up. It was great to finally put faces to names and also see old friends again. Special thanks to Raul and Johnny of R&R Entertainment for DJ/MC-ing the event.
I grabbed a few detail shots of Trini’s and my studio while setting up. We had appetizers, drinks, ambient lighting, and some good music to go along with some great minglngs/discussions. We plan on doing a mixer every quarter of the year and hope to see you (again) at the next one!
Here we are setting up for the event; wished my place could look like this 24/7!

In an oh-so-sweet way, the Wedding Clique mixer for wedding couples at the studio was the highest point of my business. Not only was I surrounded with all the wonderful couples that have given me the opportunity to do what I love, but I got the chance to enjoy the evening with some amazing vendors/good friends.
Deanne of Bella Fiore put together the fabulous floral arrangements. Raul and Johnny of R&R Entertainment provided top-notch DJ-ing service, Erica of Erica O’Brien Cake Design baked a delicious cake and had another on display, Mary of Jay’s Catering was more than gracious to provide yummy catering, and Trini of NOZZA Studio was the mastermind being the whole thing – planning, coordinating, and putting the mixer together. Special thanks to William Kim for stopping by and taking photos of the mixer.

On behalf of all the vendors that help put the mixer together for our couples, I know I speak for all of them when I say, “Thank you.” Thank you to our brides and grooms for coming to the Friday event and supporting us. Without you and your trust in what we do, there would be noUS. I’m forever grateful in each and every one of you for allowing me to come into your life and choosing me to entertain your special day. Seeing our friendship continue to grow well after the wedding day puts a huge smile on my face and that warm fuzzy feeling in my heart :). Until our next client mixer, keep on being in love, re-falling in love, and being fantastic!

Tom Talks Audio
And Gives You A Chance To
Win Some Cool Prizes

This month, Tom is talking Tips, one that he wants to deliver himself, and another from a good friend and guest demo DJ at our shows, Johnny Aftershock.  Tom’s message to mobile entertainers is this: don’t overlook the advantages of putting your show on an SD card!

“Sure it may take some getting used to, and working from a card may take some getting used to, but once you do the benefits are so great, you’ll wonder what took you so long. An SD player like the American Audio Dual SD Player With Mixer is a great investment in your career.

“Using an SD player gives you true mobility, which makes moving from gig to gig easier and frees your mind for things other than transporting a lot of stuff. Plus, with an SD player you won’t have to concern yourself with external hard drives, or worry about losing an expensive laptop. With our SD player there is no complicated software to learn. There’s not better way to give yourself freedom of mind and freedom of movement, so you can take your performance to new heights.”

Now, here’s a cool tip that came to us from our friend DJ Johnny Aftershock about placing speakers to bounce off walls in venues that aren’t typical when it comes to the shape of the room.  DJ Johnny Aftershock  recently did a wedding at a beautiful facility here in southern California, everything was lovely, but the reception wasn’t in one large hall, but in a series of rooms, and the facility placed some restrictions on where he could place his speakers. So, here’s what he did.

“I have some rocking American Audio Power Speakers and 15’ sub. They look great and produce a great sound.  These speakers are workhorses and have never clipped on me at any event, and I pump them up quite a bit at my events! At this gig, JoJo, my sound guy  configured things so the sub was pointed at the wall. This lengthened the throat of the horn so we got an extra 3dB of bass. This made up for a very weird schematic that we had to adhere to that day, as far as where the facility’s management wanted the DJ's set up at. Also if you couple the bass bottoms together, you get even more dB. I’m sure a lot of you guys already know that already – but I wanted to share it.”

Got Any Ideas On Audio To Share???

Pretty much any topic is fair game for Tom’s Audio Tips. You don’t have to use brand names in your tip, even American Audio’s. In fact, we’d prefer it if you didn’t. We’re just looking for genuinely helpful audio advice that you can offer to help your fellow DJs take their performance to the next level.

Your tip can be any length you want, but we’d prefer it if you kept it to under 150 words. Tom will be listing one tip at the end of his future Tom Talks Audio columns. (We reserve the right to edit tips that appear in the column.)

If your tip is used, you will receive 200 American DJ Advantage points and receive an American Audio shirt or similar item.  At the end of the year, we’ll have a drawing to select one tip at random. If yours is picked, you’ll receive your choice of headphones from American Audio (available from our stock at the time you win) worth up to $150 in value (MSRP). We’ll also post your photo and name in the ADJ NewsWave  -- so you’ll get glory as well as prizes.

We are in this months ADJ Newsletter :D

Wowing Them
On The Web!
ADJ And Revo Rave Star On The Crossfader Show
Episode #15 of the popular web series, The Crossfader Show, featured a “Grand Tour of American DJ”, with American DJ’s Brian Dowdle and Chuck Green as featured guests, a Revo Rave live demo and even a trip to a tricked-out car wash that featured an impressive light and sound show using American DJ products. This week’s episode gave its audience an exclusive insider-only look at the company that host Jose Heredia describes as being “synonymous with lighting all over the world, and the biggest company to mobile DJ’s”.

Hosted by Jose Heredia, aka DJ Satisfaction and DJ Johnny Aftershock, The Crossfader Show is a weekly video stream that broadcasts live every Monday at 12 pm PST on ustream.tv, and features news, interviews, personalities, in-depth reviews, tools, tips and help on all things related to the DJ Industry. Similar to American DJ, the show is made to be from a DJ’s point of view as an informative look at what’s new and hot in the DJ world.

Brian Dowdle, who is the Marketing Director for American DJ, gave a brief description of the history behind the brand’s philosophy and beginnings. Brian says, “American DJ has always been a grass roots company that was created by DJ’s for DJ’s. We are so grateful to have the chance to reach out to the DJ community so we can develop products that make sense for them and what they do.” Brian and Chuck took time on the show to answer questions about popular American DJ products and their uses.
Chuck Green’s regular YouTube show, Under The Hood, explores the latest and greatest technology from American DJ with a hands-on approach. Chuck explains that he has been a sales representative for the company, as well as an audio engineer and lighting designer who enjoys picking apart electronic equipment (both literally and figuratively) and seeing what makes it tick. In this episode of The Crossfader Show, Chuck gives the audience an insider look at the Revo Rave. The group observes as DJ Aftershock opens up a brand-new Revo Rave and gives the audience a play-by-play on how simple it is to set up the lightweight power-packed Revo Rave. Like other members of the Revo family, the Rave produces brilliant, saturated LED moonflower beams in red, green, blue and white that are so rich in color, they look great with or without fog effects. Because it’s so compact and easy to use, the Revo Rave is ideal for DJs, clubs, small venues and mobile entertainers. At the very end of the show, the now-famous Revo Rave was given away as a special prize to a very lucky viewer, Mark the DJ.

Wedding FYI

FYI: A full-service disc jockey company will normally invest 12 to 30 hours to your special event but it may appear that you are only paying for "4 hours". Consultations, music purchasing & editing, preparation, set-up and tear-down, education and other business related endeavors add up to the overall success of your special occasion. -

How To Select a DJ for your big day.

The BIG Difference Between Buying on PRICE and Investing in VALUE
When calling a DJ service, the first question many people ask is, “How much do you charge?”  There is no single answer to this question because of the variety of factors involved, such as:
  • Event Type, Date, Location, Duration, and Number of Guests Attending
  • Talent, Skill and Experience of DJ in Your Type of Event (e.g., wedding specialist)
  • Quality of Sound/Lighting Equipment
  • Size and Legality of Music Library
  • Entertainment Package and Additional Options Selected by Client
  • Time Spent Planning Event with Client in Advance
  • Company’s Liability Insurance and Professional Memberships
It’s Sad but True
The DJ is often one of the last elements budgeted for, which later proves to be a tragic mistake.   After all, does a veggie platter or an ice sculpture really add greater value than the most crucial ingredient of the party — your entertainment?
It’s the DJ who most likely has the greatest effect on the overall enjoyment of your event.  Those who set out to find the cheapest rate possible are setting themselves up for disappointment.
You are making a significant financial investment in your special occasion.  Ask yourself: Are you willing to gamble with an inexperienced, uninsured DJ who may use consumer equipment, have a small music collection and little skill on the microphone?
What a Great DJ Adds to Your Event
Like most things in life, you get what you pay for.  Good entertainment is not cheap and cheap entertainment is rarely good!  Your DJ, if you have chosen a really good one, will contribute greatly to your guests enjoyment, which encourages them to stay longer.  A Professional Mobile Disc Jockey Entertainer will display many of the following skills and attributes before and during your event:
  • Master of Ceremonies
  • Music Mixer/Programmer with the ability to select songs based on your guest demographics
  • Extensive music library covering multiple genres
  • High quality professional equipment
  • Interactive audience motivator
  • Itinerary Planner/Coordinator
  • Sound/Lighting technician
  • Flexibility to adapt to sudden changes and requests
When was the last time you heard someone say, “Boy, the chicken at that wedding was phenomenal.  I can’t wait to attend another for some more chicken!”  Seriously, people don’t say those types of things.  What they do talk about is the music that was played and whether or not they had fun at the event.
WARNING: Have you ever seen an inexperienced or incompetent DJ with second-rate equipment and music ruin a special celebration?  If you have, then we know that we are “preaching to the choir” but if you haven’t . . . Don’t let this happen to you!

thank you to stacy zemon for this blog article

Food for thought Wedding DJs......

www.crossfadershow.com

"I asked a group of wedding planners to define what a wedding reception is?, what is the purpose of a wedding reception?? and they all agreed that it was a celebration,  Well, if its a celebration, what drives it?
the flowers dont drive it, the cake doesnt drive it, the dresses dont drive it, the photos dont drive it;
they document it;....but they dont drive it......
.....the driving force of a celebration is the entertainment!!
and if we're (DJs) that driving force, we carry a lot of responsibility, and that's worth something"......

Raul & Rosie Mora 10Yr Anniversary @ Caddies, Alahambra

I had the honor DJing for my business asscoiates' 10 year anniversary wedding at the legendary Caddies Nightclub in alhambra on May 28th 2010. Raul and Rosie met in the 90s at this club, so they decided what better place than to have it at, plus they got married at the same church they married at in 2000. I also have the privileged of working with them thru thier business R&R Entertainment - mobile djs & wedding planners.

Had a great time, with dual Xponents, and TORQ DJs all nite long...
R.Dizzy (formerly of m-audio), DJ Ro (uses serato but still threw a set on TORQ) DJ Affliction (uses VDJ but used xponent as midi controller) DJ 'O' (used the m audio x-session pro), and Dj Stretch.

•        81% of guests say the thing they remember most about a wedding is the entertainment

•        4% to 6% is the amount most brides reserve for their entertainment budget

•        after their reception, 72% of all brides say they would have spent more time choosing their reception entertainment. almost 100% say they would have spent more of their budget on the entertainment

•        during wedding planning, brides say their highest priority is their attire, followed by the reception site & caterer - reception entertainment is among the least of their priorities

•        within one week after their reception, 78% of brides say they would have made entertainment their highest priority

•        65% of all couples that chose a band to entertain at their wedding, said that if they had to do it all over again, they would have chosen a DJ!!!!!!

Steps in choosing your Wedding DJ

Hiring the right DJ / MC for your Wedding can be overwhelming at times since there are so many out there to choose from.
This might be your first time ever hiring a DJ, let alone a DJ for your Wedding.
After doing some research and contacting a few DJ’s, you may find yourself asking "why does one DJ charge less for his services while another charges more?"
The answer to that common question is that most DJ's that charge a very low price are more than likely just starting off as a DJ in the Wedding Business.
They are looking to gain experience and are willing to charge you less since they have less to offer and use your Wedding for “Hands On Training”.
Also, most are not licensed to do business, or carry the proper liability insurance that most venues now-a-days require.
The most important questions you have to ask yourself are, "Can we trust a DJ / MC with little or no experience to entertain us and our guests on the most important day of our lives? Is it worth saving money by letting an in-experienced DJ / MC learn from his mistakes at OUR Wedding?"
You would also have to consider all of the other services that an experienced Wedding DJ has to offer, which is much more than just to play your requested music.
Here is a list of services that a Professional Wedding DJ should include:

Personal meeting with your DJ, I believe that it is important to meet your Wedding DJ before signing any agreement
Unlimited email and phone support prior to event
Itinerary development assistance to organize your Wedding Time Line
Assistance in recommending music to play at your event (i.e. Cocktail Hour, Grand Entrance, First Dance, Dinner, Father Daughter Dance, Bouquet & Garter Toss, Cake Cutting...
Scheduled meeting with you and your fiancee prior to your special day to go over the details of the itinerary
Communication with your other vendors to ensure a successful event
State of the art Sound and Lighting that is appealing to the eye
Professional Emcee services for introduction and event announcements
Vast music library ranging from Big Band to Today's Hits to be able to take requests from you and your guests

“A bad Wedding DJ can ruin the best of Weddings”

Along with this list of services, you may also want to ask the following important questions:

How many years of experience do you have as a "WEDDING" DJ?
Do you have Public Speaking experience? Have you had the proper training for Public Speaking?
Are you licensed to do business?
Do you have liability insurance? If so can you send me proof
Do you prepare a written, signed agreement to ensure the services that you will provide?

Meet The DJ --

Raving About DJ Johnny Aftershock

At the recent NAMM Show, Johnny Diaz, also known as DJ Johnny Aftershock, was at the American Audio booth, mixing tracks for thousands of show visitors – a far cry from his first gig, a fifth grade birthday party, not to mention that at the start of his career, he confused a crucial piece of DJ equipment with a kitchen appliance.
Back in 1988, a friend called and told Johnny that he had just picked up a mixer, young Johnny wondered why his friend was so excited about baking equipment. When Johnny arrived at the friend’s house and realized it was two record players from the 70’s, he suddenly understood. In fact, Johnny knew that it was the start of something beautiful. After practicing a bit, Johnny and his friend got their first gig: playing at a birthday party for a fifth grader, for a whopping 25 dollars.
While he now lives in Bellflower, California, Johnny was born and raised in Compton. After being introduced to the mixer, music quickly became an escape for Johnny, “It was either that or join the gang. It was all we had.” After his first gig, Johnny continued playing parties and other events as a mobile DJ and eventually got into the local rave scene. Raves were held at a different location every time, but having a good time was a certainty.
“Everyone was just there for the music. Just dancing, not worrying about drama,” Johnny says of the attitude and dedication of the ravers. Through the parties, he began to hone his skill as a mix DJ on the rave scene, focusing on New Wave and other alternative 80’s music, making him a true original. “A lot of people don’t use my type of music as much because it wasn’t made in the same way as traditional music,” Johnny says, “It’s offbeat, and there’s just something totally different about it.”
Johnny became a well-known figure, even DJing at the K-Rave at Knott’s Berry Farm, a moment that stands out more than a decade later. “It was the first and last time they allowed 5000 people to come together and ride the rides and put on a huge music festival.”
Johnny started Aftershock Entertainment, with a friend back in 1990, and the company is still going strong, serving Orange County, with a branch in San Diego. The company has played for celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres, John Travolta, and George Clooney, and appeared on-air on Power 106 FM, Groove Radio 103.1, and Sirius Satellite Radio.
To this day, no matter the event, Johnny focuses on the music, running two turntables and a mixer, though he also has a laptop set-up. “I did a lot of clubs so I’m used to not being on the microphone as much. I just want to make sure that the music’s banging and people on the dance floor are having a good time.”
While he’ll play anything from Easy Listening to Motown Classics to Top 40, at weddings, corporate events, and other bookings, Johnny still specializes in themed 80’s parties. He’s an active member in the DJ community, and it even reminds him of his early days in the raving community, explaining, “It’s also a tight camaraderie, and there’s so much respect because they know how much work you put into it.”
